Your hardware wallet can be lost, stolen, or hit by a firmware bug — and none of it matters, because the seed phrase is the actual wallet. Which means the weakest link in most setups is a piece of paper. House fires reach ~1,100°F; paper ignites at 451°F; stainless steel melts around 2,500°F. That is the entire argument for a steel backup, and at $40–105 it is the cheapest insurance in bitcoin.

What the torture tests say
Independent stress-testing — most famously Jameson Lopp’s metal storage reviews, which torch, crush and acid-bathe these products — consistently finds that center-punch designs survive better than letter-tile designs: tiles can spill or fuse in extreme heat, while punched dots in a solid plate are nearly indestructible. The four rules of steel backups
- First four letters are enough. BIP-39 words are unique in their first four characters — most products rely on this. “ABAN” can only be “abandon.”
- Stamp it once, verify it twice. Read the plate back against your wallet display before it goes in the safe. A typo in steel is very permanent.
- The plate is the crown jewels. Anyone holding it holds your bitcoin. Hide it like cash, not like a document — and consider a passphrase so the plate alone is not enough.
- Never digitize the words. No photos “just in case,” no cloud notes, no password managers. Steel exists precisely so the words never touch a computer.
