Every exchange charges you two ways: trading fees (visible) and spread (baked into the quoted price). The “easy buy” button on most apps costs 3–10× more than the same platform’s advanced trading interface. Here are the ten that matter for US buyers, ranked by our overall assessment of cost, security history, and honesty of pricing.
| Exchange | Maker / taker (base tier) | Easy-buy cost | Notes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kraken | 0.16% / 0.26% | ~1.5% instant buy | Strong security record, Pro interface | Low-fee active traders |
| Coinbase | 0.40% / 0.60% | ~1% spread; up to 3.99% by card | Largest US exchange, public company | Beginners who want hand-holding |
| Gemini | 0.20% / 0.40% (ActiveTrader) | ~1.49% + spread | NY trust company, compliance-first | Regulation-minded holders |
| River | Bitcoin-only | Free recurring buys; small one-time fee | Full-reserve custody, Lightning support | Bitcoin-only savers |
| Swan | Bitcoin-only | ~0.99% on buys | Built for automatic weekly stacking | Set-and-forget DCA |
| Strike | Spread-based | Low, varies | Lightning-native, instant global payments | Payments + cheap DCA |
| Crypto.com | ~0.25% / 0.50% | Spread-based | Fee discounts require staking CRO | App-first multicoin users |
| Bitstamp | ~0.30% / 0.40% | Varies | Operating since 2011 | Simple, boring spot trading |
| Binance.US | Among the lowest | Varies | Regulatory history worth reading about | Fee minimizers |
| Robinhood | Commission-free | Spread cost (hidden in price) | Supports BTC withdrawal (finally) | Stock-app convenience |
Fees checked August 2026 at published base tiers; volume discounts apply above them, and fees change often — always confirm on the exchange’s own fee page before trading. Sources: CoinLaw, DailyCoin, exchange fee schedules.
The fee traps to avoid
- Card purchases: buying with a debit/credit card costs 2–4% nearly everywhere. Link a bank account instead.
- The easy-buy button: on Coinbase, the same $1,000 purchase can cost ~$14 via the simple screen or ~$6 on Coinbase Advanced. Same company, same coins.
- Spread-only “zero fee” apps: commission-free usually means the fee is hidden in a worse price. Compare the quoted price against the market price.
- Settlement holds: ACH deposits typically clear instantly for buying but take 3–5 business days before you can withdraw the bitcoin. Wire transfers clear same-day. Plan withdrawals accordingly.
The step everyone skips
An exchange is a place to buy bitcoin, not a place to keep it. Coins on an exchange are an IOU that depends on that company’s solvency — ask anyone who used Mt. Gox, Celsius, or FTX. Once your purchase settles, withdraw to a wallet you control: our step-by-step guide takes under an hour, and the comparison table will help you pick the wallet.
