The caveats
Two things keep Ledger devices off our top recommendation for bitcoin-focused readers. First, the firmware is not fully open source, so the community cannot independently audit everything the device runs. Second, the optional Ledger Recover subscription demonstrated that firmware can, with user opt-in, extract encrypted key shards — a capability many self-custody users would prefer not to exist at all. Neither is a practical exploit, but both are philosophical strikes.
Verdict
If you hold a diverse portfolio and want hardware that feels like a consumer product rather than a hacker tool, the Flex is the best thing Ledger makes at a defensible price. Bitcoin-only users get better alignment elsewhere. Buy directly from Ledger.
