What Is Cold Storage? Bitcoin Self-Custody, Explained Simply

“Cold storage” simply means keeping the private keys that control your bitcoin on something that never touches the internet. No exchange account, no phone app, no browser extension — a key that exists only offline cannot be stolen by anything that happens online.

Hot vs. cold, in one minute

A “hot” wallet is any wallet whose keys live on an internet-connected device: exchange accounts, mobile apps, browser wallets. Convenient, and fine for spending money. A “cold” wallet keeps keys on an offline device — usually a purpose-built hardware wallet — and only ever sends signed transactions, never the keys themselves. Think checking account vs. vault.

Why exchanges are not storage

When bitcoin sits on an exchange, the exchange holds the keys; you hold a promise. Exchange failures — Mt. Gox, QuadrigaCX, FTX — turned that promise into years of bankruptcy court. “Not your keys, not your coins” is not a slogan, it is a description of the legal reality.

What cold storage actually looks like

  1. You buy a hardware wallet directly from its manufacturer (ours are compared here).
  2. During setup, the device generates a random seed phrase — 12 to 24 words — entirely offline.
  3. You write those words on paper, then stamp or store them in metal. The words never touch a camera, keyboard, or cloud.
  4. You send bitcoin to addresses the device gives you. The coins are now controlled by keys that have never existed online.
  5. To spend, the device signs the transaction internally and you physically confirm on its screen.

What cold storage does not protect against

Honesty matters here: cold storage stops remote theft. It does not stop you losing your own backup, falling for a scam that convinces you to send coins voluntarily, or dying without a plan for your family to recover them. Those risks have their own answers — our seed phrase storage guide and bitcoin inheritance guide cover them.

Is it worth the effort?

Setting up real cold storage takes about an hour and costs less than most people lose to a single exchange withdrawal fee spree. If your bitcoin matters to you, the hour is the cheapest insurance available in this industry.
