Every exchange charges you two ways: trading fees (visible) and spread (baked into the quoted price). The “easy buy” button on most apps costs 3–10× more than the same platform’s advanced trading interface. Here are the ten that matter for US buyers, ranked by our overall assessment of cost, security history, and honesty of pricing.

The fee traps to avoid

  • Card purchases: buying with a debit/credit card costs 2–4% nearly everywhere. Link a bank account instead.
  • The easy-buy button: on Coinbase, the same $1,000 purchase can cost ~$14 via the simple screen or ~$6 on Coinbase Advanced. Same company, same coins.
  • Spread-only “zero fee” apps: commission-free usually means the fee is hidden in a worse price. Compare the quoted price against the market price.
  • Settlement holds: ACH deposits typically clear instantly for buying but take 3–5 business days before you can withdraw the bitcoin. Wire transfers clear same-day. Plan withdrawals accordingly.

The step everyone skips

An exchange is a place to buy bitcoin, not a place to keep it. Coins on an exchange are an IOU that depends on that company’s solvency — ask anyone who used Mt. Gox, Celsius, or FTX. Once your purchase settles, withdraw to a wallet you control: our step-by-step guide takes under an hour, and the comparison table will help you pick the wallet.
